Harrods unimpressed by women in Welsh costume on St David's Day

Seven women dressed in full traditional Welsh costume on St David's Day did not quite receive the warm welcome they envisaged at one of the most famous stores in the world.
Security guards at Harrods were bemused by the patriotic attire of the Bridgend friends on a hen weekend and initially denied them entry.
But they were allowed in after a dress code check revealed tall hats and shawls were not on the banned list.
Harrods apologised "for any confusion".
The women were on a visit to London for a hen weekend involving shopping and a show, and dressed in Welsh costumes because it was St David's Day - 1 March.
But they said their weekend was tarnished by their experience at Harrods.
One member of the group, Gaynor Newton, said they had been stopped by passers-by and told how good their outfits were until they ran into the Harrods door staff.

We apologise for any confusion and hope they went on to have an enjoyable visit”

"The doorman just told us 'you can't come in dressed like that' and promptly asked us to leave," she said.
Another member of the group, Denise Evans, said: "We had such a response. We were asked to pose for pictures at Paddington station. Tourists kept asking us to pose with them."
The group said they finally got into Harrods at another entrance after claiming they were being discriminated against.
A spokesperson for Harrods said the group had been asked to wait while the security guard double-checked the dress code.
"The women didn't want to wait and went to another entrance where they were admitted, as by that time the security team were aware they were wearing national dress," said the spokesperson.
"We certainly did not deny them entry and always welcome all visitors in national costume.
"We apologise for any confusion and hope they went on to have an enjoyable visit."

Lady Gaga sues Lloyd's syndicates over cancelled tour

Lady Gaga's production company and two concert promoters have filed a lawsuit against three Lloyd's of London insurance syndicates.
The three companies claimed that the insurers failed to pay out on a terrorism policy taken out before a planned concert in Indonesia last June.
The gig, for which more than 50,000 tickets were sold, was cancelled after threats made by an Islamic group.
It promised "chaos" if the singer performed in the Muslim nation.
Police in Jakarta refused to approve the concert after the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) threatened to disrupt Lady Gaga's concert, calling her a "devil's messenger" who wears only a "bra and panties".
'Cruel hardship' Live Nation LG Tours, Mermaid Touring and the Atom Factory, owned by Lady Gaga's manager Troy Carter, filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles on 3 March against the three Lloyd's of London syndicates identified as Beazley Syndicate 623, Beazley Syndicate 2623 and Talbot Syndicate 1183.
The three plaintiffs are seeking at least $75,000 in damages for breach of contract, saying the insurers had refused to pay out, based on "language and purported conditions that are not contained in the terrorism policies," according to court documents.
The plaintiffs accused the insurers of subjecting them to "cruel and unjust hardship" because of the cancelled gig.
In a statement, Beazley said: "We don't comment on matters that are the subject of litigation. We always seek to pay all valid claims as quickly as possible."

Bolshoi dancer Dmitrichenko 'did not mean acid attack

A Bolshoi Ballet dancer accused over an attack on artistic director Sergei Filin has told a court he did not mean for him to be splashed with acid.
Soloist Pavel Dmitrichenko is accused of masterminding the attack. He appeared in court with two other men accused of helping carry it out.
Police say the three have confessed. They were denied bail at the hearing.
Mr Filin's eyesight was badly damaged when a masked attacker threw sulphuric acid in his face in January in Moscow.
After a series of operations on his eyes, the 42-year-old has been moved to Germany, where doctors have expressed hope that further treatment may be able to restore good vision.
The attack opened a window into bitter infighting and rivalries inside the Bolshoi theatre, correspondents say.

Sergei Filin - before and after

  • 1970 - born in Moscow
  • 1988 - began dancing at Bolshoi
  • Winner of Russian and international awards
  • Performed abroad, including at Covent Garden, London
  • 2008 - dancing career ends
  • March 2011 - takes over as Bolshoi artistic director
Mr Dmitrichenko, 29, was detained on Tuesday.
On Thursday he appeared in court with Yuri Zarutsky, who is suspected of carrying out the assault, and Andrei Lipatov, accused of driving a getaway vehicle.
Mr Dmitrichenko said he had told Mr Zarutsky about corrupt practices at the Bolshoi Ballet.
He added: "When he said: 'OK, let me beat him up, hit him over the head', I agreed. But that is all that I admit to doing. It's not true that I ordered him to throw acid at Filin."
Police have said they believed Mr Dmitrichenko had paid his alleged accomplices 50,000 roubles (£1,090; $1,600) for the attack.
The court ruled that the three would remain in custody pending a trial. They were later formally charged with grievous bodily harm.
Mr Dmitrichenko has been with the Bolshoi Ballet since 2002. He is a leading soloist, one level down from the very senior male dancers known as premiers.
He has been performing the lead role in Sergei Prokofiev's Ivan The Terrible.
The attack spurred a round of vicious recriminations among some of the leading lights of the theatre.
Suspicions were cast on dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze, who was accused by Bolshoi manager Anatoly Iksanov of inspiring the attack, if not being behind it.
Mr Tsiskaridze was questioned, but denied any involvement and has not been charged.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith to be tried in New York

A man described as a spokesman for Osama bin Laden has been arrested and will be tried in New York City, the US has confirmed.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was captured within the last week in Jordan, Congressman Peter King said on Thursday.
Mr Abu Ghaith is Bin Laden's son-in-law and played a role in plotting the attacks of 9/11, US officials said.
Bin Laden was killed in a May 2011 raid on his hideout in Pakistan by a team of US commandos.
Mr Abu Ghaith is scheduled to appear in a federal court on Friday on charges of conspiracy to kill United States nationals.
"Sulaiman Abu Ghaith held a key position in al-Qaeda, comparable to the consigliere in a mob family or propaganda minister in a totalitarian regime," said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos in a statement.
"He used his position to threaten the United States and incite its enemies."

Birmingham stabbing: Man held over Christina Edkins attack

Christina Edkins
A man has been arrested after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death on a rush-hour bus on one of Birmingham's busiest roads.
Christina Edkins was attacked on board the bus on Hagley Road while on her way to Leasowes High School in Halesowen.
Her head teacher Neil Shaw described her as a "bright and popular student" who was "much loved by staff and students".
A 22-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder.
West Midlands Police said officers had spotted a man acting suspiciously who fitted the description of the suspect and was arrested after a short chase.
'Support pupils' Det Supt Richard Baker said the teenager's family were "distressed and distraught".
Police officers stood guard at the family's home near Birmingham city centre for much of the day, while specialist officers sought to comfort relatives.
Counsellors were also being brought in to support pupils and staff at Leasowes High School. The BBC's James Bovill said some were in tears as they left the school.
Mr Shaw said: "We are deeply saddened to hear this tragic news and our thoughts and hearts go out to her family and everyone who knew her."
Suspect arrested by police A 22-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder
Police said they would be checking Christina's profiles on social media websites as part of the investigation, but there was nothing to suggest she was being targeted.
Christina is understood to have boarded the bus minutes before the attack, which happened at about 07:40 GMT on Thursday.
The driver raised the alarm and attempts were made to revive the teenager, but she died at the scene.
Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbing. They added that there was nothing at this stage to suggest the attacker and Christina were known to each other.
The 22-year-old suspect was arrested near the Morrisons supermarket at Five Ways at about 12:30 GMT, following a city-wide manhunt.
Another man who was earlier detained in the city centre by police has since been released.
Det Supt Baker said officers were now analysing hours of CCTV footage, including some from on the bus.
He said he believed there were some passengers on board at the time of the attack who had not yet come forward.
'Tragic incident' Officers patrolled buses and schools across the city on Thursday afternoon to help reassure people.
West Midlands Police gave an update on the arrest
Detectives said the murder investigation was still in its "very early stages" and they did not want to speculate on the motive.
The bus was earlier removed from the scene and the road reopened.
A spokesman from National Express West Midlands said: "We can confirm that a tragic incident took place on a number 9 service this morning.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the person involved and we will offer all possible support to the police in their investigation into the matter."
Anyone with information can call police on 0800 096 0095.
